In the story of “Pygmalion” a man named Mr. Higgins, meets a flower girl named Eliza Doolittle. She is a filthy, poor, and uneducated women. Mr. Higgins found Eliza’s illiterate ways so amusing he wanted to change and help her turn into a proper lady. There are many themes to “Pygmalion” but their are only two that really stood out to me, which are appearance and social class.
To everyone Eliza was just a dirty flower girl, who could not speak proper and did not amount to anything, they thought that based on the way she looked. I always thought looks are not everything but in this story the upper class think in a different way and only on your appearances. They do not care who you are unless you have millions and dress properly. That is why know one cared for Eliza, she only sold flowers which did not make her rich and she wore the same raggedy clothes everyday. When she was taught how to be clean, and speak properly. People saw her differently, even Mr. Higgins fell for her. Eliza worked hard to make people turn heads at her and it all worked out at the Embassy in London, all of the upper class thought she was an Hungarian Princess.
The theme that stood out to me is social class. In that period of time “Pygmalion” was written social classification was an unavoidable reality, and it still is to this very day. It does not matter what you do or where your from or even who you are, someone is going to classify you what social class they think you are in. I can connect with this because I see how people classify others into those social classes. I am in a low classification but I do not know why. I see tons that are hurt by their classifications, but they should not care and work hard just like Eliza did. I work hard all of the time and I do not care because classifying people is stupid, you should just focus on the important things in life.
In this story many themes can alter are life story, some bad and others great. If it is bad then only you can change it, by working and focusing on your goals. Appearances are not everything and neither is classification so stick to being you and only you. Do not change for anyone but only to better yourself and your life’s story.
