The first ironic part of the story is that three friends are planning to go kill death after seeing a friend of their’s funeral pass them at a bar. After planning this, the three men end up killing themselves over being greedy instead of death. The reader can see that in the process of trying to kill death is impossible, and you will just kill yourself instead.
The second ironic part of the story is are the friend’s wanting the gold all for themselves. When the three men find the gold, their plan of killing death disappears. They all want the gold, and plan on ‘sharing’, when reality is they all are going to kill each other over it. The reader can see that greed can cause many problems, including one’s death.
The last part of this story is the most ironic of all. The Pardoner that is telling the story is a very greedy man himself. Being selfish can lead to your own death. Readers can find this ironic because of after learning about The Pardoner they find out how much of a greedy person he is.
The Pardoner’s Tale is a tale of ironic greed. It has its twists and turns, and the reader can infer from the story that you cannot kill death, simply impossible.
